The T-34 is a Soviet tank.

Description[]

Developed to replace the T-26 and the BT fast tanks of the interwar period designs, the T-34 was the mainstay of the Soviet armoured forces in the 1940s, and its importance was so great that it became the most produced tank in World War II. Its design with sloped armour, wide tracks, and powerful gun was so influential that it had an impact on future tank designs on both sides of the war. Although production started in 1940, it was only in late 1941 were the tanks produced in greater numbers from multiple factories to replenish the initial heavy losses after the German invasion. The tanks underwent several simplifications and modifications throughout the war, but most were relatively minor in order to not slow down production rate. With the increasing number of heavier German tanks designed to counter the T-34, however, the T-34/76s were gradually replaced by variant with a larger turret and a more powerful gun from 1944 until the end of the war.

The T-34 also spawned a number of specialised variants, such as the OT-34/85 flamethrower tank, SU-122 self-propelled artillery, as well as the SU-85 and SU-100 tank destroyers.

There are three production versions of the T-34 featured in BattleGroup42: T-34/76 Model 1941, T-34/76 Model 1943, and T-34/85. Both T-34/76 Model 1941 and Model 1943 are armed with the 76.2mm F-34 gun with a DT machine gun on the coaxial mount, and another at the front of the hull. Model 1941 is the second production variant, and is a common sight in maps up until 1943, where they are replaced by the Model 1943 variant with a new hexagonal turret. The 76.2mm gun is an adequate gun against similar tanks of the time, but less so against heavier tanks. The T-34/85 has a powerful 85mm D-5T gun, giving it enough firepower to go toe-to-toe with most German heavy tanks late in the war.

Trivia[]

  • During the mod's early development, it uses the original Battlefield 1942's T-34 as a base model. The model was later replaced with high quality renders in version 1.6.
  • There is a promotional image of T-34 Model 1940, which first appeared on the Battlefield 2 mod BattleGroup Frontlines. However, the model featured the F-34 tank gun instead of the L-11, and it was not adopted for use in BattleGroup42.
